Zephyr QAL Weeks 6&7: Sew Half and Quarter Scrap Sets

It's time to move onto our smaller scraps!  This part goes much faster because you only have to make two rails from each scrap.  Take the number of half scrap sets needed and divide by two; that's the number of half scrap sets you need to sew this week.  Next week you'll be sewing the remainder of the half scrap sets as well as any quarter scrap sets your layout requires.

The only tricky thing about sewing the half scrap sets is sewing them out of directional fabric.  Cut one of your background fabric squares in half diagonally, then use as a template for cutting your colorful triangles - the diagonals need to go in opposite directions.

Place the background fabric triangles on your scrap fabric so one diagonal runs left-to-right and the other runs right-to-left, then cut the scrap along the diagonal of the triangle.  The rectangle pieces also need to be cut in the opposite directions so everything lines up when the rails are sewn together.

Then you can sew together the rails as you have been doing!

If it matters which side is up (this fabric would look fine with the stripes going horizontally or vertically, but a text print for example might need to go in a particular direction), you'll also need to think about where in the quilt this half-scrap set is going to end up.

The quarter scrap sets work in much the same way - you only need to make one from each scrap, but check your coloring sheet to see how it's oriented if the final direction of the fabric matters to you.  Depending on your layout, you may not need to make any quarter scrap sets; these are just there to fill in any corner holes the other scrap sets leave behind.

If you paid attention to the silly rail photo at the start of the post, you can see the white Vs aren't going in the same direction; that's because they are cut to line up when they are arranged properly like the photo directly above this one (but two-toned pinwheels might also be fun!).  Now it's your turn - finish sewing those rails and I'll be back again in two weeks to go through laying out your quilt top and starting to sew the rails together!

In true scrappy fashion, our last prize for sewing rails is a choice between the two fabric prizes that haven't been selected yet, a selection of layer cake squares or fat quarters.  Your chances of winning are great, so share those rails!  Post a photo on Instagram with the hashtag #zephyrqal and tag me @bluepipdesigns to win!  In two weeks, I'll randomly select one post to win the prize of your choice.

The Zephyr pattern is available in my pattern shop!  We're getting close to the end, but the quilt-along doesn't end until the end of April so you can still get in on the fun!  Join my mailing list to get a coupon code for a discount off your first purchase, whether it's Zephyr or another one of my patterns.  You'll also be the first to know about new patterns and quilt-alongs!
