2021 Monthly Recap: June

Image
June was split into three distinct parts for me this summer: a small vacation to celebrate being vaccinated and hike on new paths; frantically sewing when I got home because I had two quilt top deadlines in a week (the fabric for both came while I was gone!); and lazy time picking things to make small progress on once the tops were done.  What a rush!  My WIP count went up this month, but I'm not worried - two quilts are in binding stage and one is almost ready to be basted so things are moving along nicely. Quilt Tally WIP List at beginning of month: 14 WIP List at end of month: 16 Untouched in 2021: 5 Active QAL Projects: 1 Kid Projects: 2 Quilts Finished Challenger Quilt (June 2021) - A bonus layout for the  2021 100 Days Challenge Quilts Started Summer Scrap Quilt - I've been wanting to make a rail fence quilt forever, and when I saw this version in the last issue of Make Modern magazine   (affiliate link) I knew it was time. Shades of Summer

I can't think of a better way to kick off summer than with a beautiful, beachy photo of my latest finish, Shades of Summer! (I'd like to give a special shoutout to the child who forgot their tie-dye crocs at the beach; they were the perfect compliment to the flip-flops we brought with!). The name of this quilt comes from the fabric line I used, Shades of Summer .  It's bright and perfect for summer!  The pattern is the latest in Angie Wilson's 9-patch parade and is called Starry Technicolor Chaos   (affiliate link) , and I pulled out my almost no-waste flying geese tutorial  to make the border part go super quickly! I quilted this one myself with big swirls, focusing on keeping them at least three inches in diameter.  I had a plastic bowl that was the right size to help me eyeball the first couple of swirls, but as I got going it was easy to keep the pattern going (obviously there are a few smaller ones in there as fill

100 Days 2021

It's June 1st!  Only one month until my favorite annual quilt-along begins: 100 Days 100 Blocks hosted by Angie at Gnome Angel!  I've made six quilts in this quilt-along over the years and I'm looking forward to this year just as much! My first 100 Days quilt was the Animal City quilt in 2016.  Each block has a different animal print and a solid fabric. In 2018, I split the 100 blocks between two different quilts (some blocks are in both quilts).  One version is all blue and green scraps  with the blocks enlarged to 10".  In hindsight, I wish I would have assembled them in a checkerboard pattern, but this one gets frequent use by the kids so I guess it's fine as is! The other blocks went into what is probably my favorite 100 Days quilt, Pandamonium .  I chose a single focus fabric and four coordinating solids, then used scrappy fabrics that matched the solids. In 2019, the pattern switched to Angie's own Kinship patte
