Sew Place Like Home!

A movie quilt is a fun quilt, and today I am sharing one based on one of the most iconic movies of all time, The Wizard of Oz!

This was a quilt-along quilt designed by John at Art East Quilting.  Not only did I finish it on time, I even worked on the blocks in the correct order; the patterns were released monthly so there was no way to work ahead.  Each month, I received a character block and and a border block to make.  I bought the background fabric, but the rest of the quilt is scrappy from my stash.  Mostly solids, but with a print thrown in when I felt it was appropriate.

Sometimes I struggle to find a place to photograph my quilts, but I saw this green bridge "over nothing" in front of a water tower at the edge of the bowling alley parking lot when I was dropping my child off at a birthday party and knew it was perfect.  When we came back to take the photos, there was no wind and we got several nice shots in under five minutes, which may be a quilt photoshoot record.  The children were certainly happy, and the donuts we got on the way home made them even happier!

I had this quilt long-armed by Lauren at Tekstil Crave using the Twister pantograph.  The name goes well with the theme of the quilt, but the actual design isn't a literal tornado, it's more of an abstract shape that looks nice without taking over.

The backing on this quilt is a Ruby Star Society print called Linear Cactus Labyrinth by Rashida Coleman-Hale.  It reminded me of the yellow brick road without being a literal brick road.  The binding is a navy solid.  I didn't use any navy in the quilt top, but it's a nice contrast to the background fabric - it frames the quilt without taking over.  I used the Free Spirit brand instead of my usual Kona and I liked how it was a little thinner so the binding isn't overly bulky.

Thanks for taking a trip to Oz with me!
