Lemon Blossom Mystery Quilt

It's a cold and rainy evening in November and I'm dreaming about the crisp fall weather we had back in October when I went on a before-school mission with my son to take photos of my Lemon Blossom Mystery quilt (which I actually finished in September)!

The pattern was written by Kindred Quilt Co as a guest designer for the Toad Circle Mystery Quilt program.  Toad Circle was new to me, although she's done many mystery quilt-alongs before.  I found the site through a quilty friend who asked if I was interested in sewing a mystery quilt with curves.  I had mentally added a quilt with my curves to my "want to sew" list so I responded with an enthusiastic "yes!"  I was doubly excited when I saw that that supplies list required a fat quarter bundle; I immediately purchased the one I had my eye on, Giucy Giuce's Motley collection.

I actually finished the quilt top on time and quickly basted it.  Then I straight-line quilted the horizontal and vertical lines between the blocks and did some diamonds in the intersections between the blocks.  I added some detail to the border, which stabilized the entire quilt.  I knew I wanted to do each colorful bit with matching thread, but didn't have time to do that right away.  However, since the straight-line quilting was holding everything in place perfectly I put on the binding (which matches the background fabric).  Now I had an almost-quilted quilt with the binding already finished.

The back of the quilt is a gray Grunge wideback, which I thought would show off the colors of the front nicely.  Turns out they mostly blend in, which is a bit disappointing but not the end of the world.  When I finally had time to finish the colored bits, I kept my quilting simple, outlining each shape and then doing a meander on the solid ones and a straight-line pattern on the hollow ones.  It was nice to have a finished quilt as soon as I buried the last thread!

I do not know when or if this pattern will be available to purchase, but it was great to work with curves in a beautiful rainbow again!  Here's hoping that the rain will turn to snow soon and we will have an actual snowstorm this winter!
