Introducing: Space Parade!
It's a beautiful spring Tuesday, the perfect day for a pattern release. It's time to blast into outer space with Space Parade, the newest BluePip Designs pattern!
As you can see, my obsession with postage stamp quilts is still going strong. This iteration started with my attempt to design a houndstooth quilt block and morphed into an Irish-chain-type design!
I did my original mock-up in the green and black color way that ended up being the cover version of the quilt. My husband's input was "Cool! That quilt looks like the old Space Invaders video game!" and he asked me to make him the quilt in those exact colors. This was an easy enough request and I was happy to comply. I used Stardust in Ebony by Dear Stella for the background fabric because the name seemed appropriate and a batik called Dotted Sparkles in Peridot by Robert Kaufman for the lime green feature fabric.
I quilted this first version in a grid pattern, first horizontal and vertical and then at 45 degree angles following the chain path. The back is two slightly different black flannel fabrics that were left over from other projects and the binding is the same as the background fabric.
Then I thought, what if I doubled the fun and made the quilt with four colors instead? I decided to go with a bold checkerboard look, but keep it cohesive by using the fabric line Pips by Kim Schaefer for Andover Fabrics in four different color ways.
I settled it down with some cute flannel foxes on a gray background for the back of the quilt and quilted it in a meander that matched the feature fabric of each block. I could have chosen any of the four colors for the binding, but went with the blue because it compliments my backing fabric the best.
Space Parade is available as a PDF pattern and is on sale (along with the rest of my patterns!) until March 31st, no coupon needed. You'll get a slightly better price if you shop in my BluePip pattern shop due to the fees that Etsy charges. For now, I'll close out with my favorite picture of Space Parade: my attempt at an artistic photograph near a grocery store that recently went out of business. It is, unfortunately, rotated 90 degrees which means even though it still looks fantastic, it's not how the pattern is written so it was automatically disqualified from cover consideration (but I still couldn't resist sharing it!). Thanks for stopping by and I'll be back tomorrow with some alternate versions of the quilt!
