Full-Size Floppy Quilts

This is a 2-for-1 blog post: two full-size Floppy quilts in one blog post! Each quilt features one of the quilt blocks in the Floppy pattern, so together they show off the whole thing.

I designed the 3.5 Inch Floppy quilt block first, and it was the first quilt I made too.  I liked how the the floral pattern looked on my small test block, so I decided I wanted to continue with that theme for my full-sized quilt.  The block is jelly roll friendly, so I grabbed a junior jelly roll of Love, Lily by April Rosenthal and got started.

I skipped the white strips because they blended in too well with the labels (this amazing rainbow stripe that took me right back to the 1980s) and ended up with 15 blocks.  This wasn't enough for a full-size throw quilt, so I cut some squares from a coordinating fabric and made a checkerboard quilt.  Turns out, there's almost no contrast between the two fabrics unless you look at it up close.  That wasn't my plan, but I like it!

Both of these quilts were sent out to be long-arm quilted, and Jill did a fantastic job.  I told her I was looking for a "steam punk" inspired panto and she found this one that looks like little mouse pointers.  To finish the quilt, I stuck with the floral theme and used a floral wideback and a dark pink binding that compliments both the background fabric and the backing fabric.

The 5.5 Inch Floppy Quilt had a rather unconventional start (for me at least).  I bought the silver background fabric and a layer cake thinking that the block was layer-cake friendly.  Turns out, when I was calculating how much fabric was needed for each block, I forgot two rather large pieces (don't worry - this step happens long before the pattern is released to you.  It's why I have a tech editor and test the patterns thoroughly).  I was eager to get started, so I looked around my sewing room for a Plan B.  I found this fabric and note in my box of earmarked fabrics.

Thomas is my brother, so that part isn't a mystery, but what quilt I was planning on making him is!  The fabric is from the 2012 fabric line Juggling Summer by Zen Chic Moda and I've given him several quilts since then.  I decided that the fabric was better used than stashed for another 12 years and chose my colors for the quilt top based on this backing fabric.

Each color of disk has it's own unique label and I arranged them in an ombre pattern.  This is not my usual color scheme, but I really like how it turned out!  Jill suggested this circle in a square panto because they look like simple stylized Floppy disks and I quickly agreed.  The binding is a black and white stripe, also from my stash.  I admire this choice when other people make it, and I was happy to have a quilt to use it on myself.

Floppy is available now and on sale for a special price through the end of the year, no coupon code needed.  I'll be back next week with my 2025 wrap-up post, but for now it's time to enjoy a week with my family - we'll be bowling, playing board games, and eating lots of yummy food.  Thanks for stopping by!
