Introducing: Pebbled Prairie!

It's pattern release day!  Say hello to Pebbled Prairie, the newest BluePip Designs pattern!

This design came to me in the middle of one of my daily walks last fall.  I had to detour from my normal route due to some road construction and ended up walking through the parking lot of the original high school for my town.  I'd been there before many times (my middle son went to preschool there), but never actually looked at the building. But that day, I noticed it and immediately decided it needed to be my next quilt pattern.

I spent the rest of my walk thinking about how I could turn that into a quilt pattern.  I started with a literal interpretation, but by the time I got home I had decided on a scrappier version.  I walked in the house and immediately sat down and started sketching so I wouldn't forget. I also added alternate layouts that have a more traditional and less modern feel.  By adding an extra column to the throw-size layout, Pebbled Prairie can be a more traditional 3x3 grid.  The baby size is also in this traditional layout, while the queen is the more modern off-set grid throw layout.

I haven't had a chance to sew this one up yet, but I have my fabric picked out and will be sewing this version in the quilt-along that is scheduled to start on October 6th - stay tuned for more details on that!  But you don't have to wait for October to start sewing - you can jump in right now and make this your project for National Sew a Jelly Roll Day on September 21, 2024.  That's right, the Pebbled Prairie blocks are 100% jelly roll friendly (you will need yardage for the sashing and borders though).  Something about having all your fabric already cut to the right width before you even start a project is just magical.  The fabric requirements for Pebbled Prairie are given in both jelly roll and yardage quantities so you can use one or the other or a combination of both to make your quilt look as scrappy as you'd like it to be.  Most of the layouts require two jelly rolls to create, but you can start with just one and use fabric from your stash to flesh it out and get the exact amount of fabric that you need.  This is especially helpful when the jelly roll doesn't have quite enough of one of the colors you want to use!

And a little tip - I'm terrible at randomizing my fabrics for scrappy tops, but I finally found the perfect way to do it for nine-patches: I create nine piles of squares and number them 1-9, then use a Sodoku answer key to build them.  That gives me nine unique layouts for the nine patches, no agonizing necessary.

The quilting on my Halloween cover version of this quilt was done by Jill Slipper-Scholtz - it's adorable little creatures who are ready for trick-or-treating.  I called my color scheme for this quilt "subtle Halloween" because I didn't use very many Halloween fabrics, instead capturing the spirit through my color choices.  But the backing and quilting somehow missed that memo and went all out!  The binding is a neutral brown print, chosen to blend into the outer border without matching perfectly.

Pebbled Prairie is on sale until September 23rd, no coupon code needed.  Thank you for stopping by and taking a look at my new pattern!  I'll have another blog post up tomorrow featuring the baby version of this quilt.
