Project Quilting 16.1: Mythical Creatures
It's the second week of 2025 and I'm here with my first finish of the year, a mini quilt for the newest round of Project Quilting! Last year was my first year joining in on this fun challenge and I've been eagerly awaiting the start of the new season. I was actually on vacation when this challenge was announced, and our flight home was ultimately delayed for 18 hours so I had plenty of time to mull the challenge over before I was able to get into my sewing room and start my project. I didn't want to do anything cutesy and I knew I it was going on the windowsill in my sewing room, which meant I wanted it to be purple.
I ultimately decided to make a dragon-scale mug rug. I did a google image search for inspiration, then made my own quick FPP pattern for the scales using EQ8. If I was going to make this again, I would edit the pattern pieces to reduce bulk at some of the seams, but as a one-off project I think it turned out perfectly.
Last year, I felt like I did more projects with purchased yardage than scrappy from my stash, and this year I want to focus on using up what I already have. This spool of gold thread has been in my thread box for so long that I can't even remember why I bought it. But it was a perfect match for this project and I quilted a shiny gold dragon scale pattern over the entire piece. Finally, I used a solid piece of purple fabric from my solids scrap box as a binding. There's a lot going on already and I didn't want to introduce another print to the mix.
For the back, I used up this piece of purple dragon-scale fabric that I thought was a little too on-the-nose for the front of the quilt. I had almost exactly enough, which is why there's a stripe down the middle of it. This has been sitting in my scrap box for a very long time and I'm glad that it finally has a good home.
And that's a wrap on week one of Project Quilting for 2025! I'll be spending next week finishing up the binding of my two-color Space Parade quilt, working on the Space Parade pattern, and finishing up my Fado Road quilt. I'm also busy winding all my DMC floss onto the acrylic bobbins that I got for Christmas. They fit perfectly into their little file cabinet and the organization of the whole thing makes me so happy!
Thanks for stopping by! I'm linking up my finish on the Project Quilting web party!
