2021 Monthly Recap: May

Image
May is always a crazy cross-over month - I want to be outside enjoying the warm weather, but I also want to finish as much as possible before the kids are out of school for the summer.  I'm thrilled to have finished two old WIPs between long walks outside - maybe there is hope for my WIP list after all! Quilt Tally WIP List at beginning of month: 15 WIP List at end of month: 14 (one needs binding, one is a finished top!) Untouched in 2021: 5 Active QAL Projects: 1 Kid Projects: 2 Quilts Finished Forgotten Fat Quarter (December 2019) Plaidish (June 2020) Shades of Summer (May 2021) - A fun pattern test I can't share yet, but here's a sneak peek of the colors and the quilting. Plaidish Moths

It's a cloudy, overcast day today, perfect for taking quilt photos outside!  Luckily for me, I had one that was waiting for a day just like this - Plaidish is done! I promise that all my quilt pictures won't be in my backyard forever, but the quilt holder is new and my last two finishes were huge so I'm just getting used to using it!  My little quilt helpers also appreciate the new quilt stand.  Just like my Forgotten Fat Quarter quilt , this top is entirely from my stash, but the focus for this one is Ruby Star and vintage Cotton and Steel fat quarters! The pattern is Plaidish by Kitchen Table Quilting , and I pulled from three main color groups: navy, pink, and low volume. This gives it a true "plaid" feeling both from a distance and up close! I splurged on one of the new Ruby Star widebacks to finish my quilt.   Rise in dark teal matched the colors of my quilt top perfectly so it was an easy decision!  This quilt was professional long-armed by Lau

Forgotten Fat Quarter Quilt

I'm kicking off the week with a finish from farther back on my WIP list - the Forgotten Fat Quarter quilt! This one was started in December 2019 as a monthly "row along" but got put on the back burner with only two rows to go. The quilt gets its name from the fact that I decided to use up all my very old gray fat quarters to make the rows. The ones that have been sitting around forever and you have no idea when or why you actually purchased them. Instead of buying a single background fabric, I dug into my box of solids and found pieces that were big enough for each row.   The pattern was designed by Sugaridoo for Bernina , but of course I took some liberties with it based on the size of my scraps!  The finished quilt fits a twin-sized bed comfortably, so it's quite a good size. The back is also scrappy from my stash.  I particularly like the clock fabric on the left, but apparently not enough to ever use it!  The selvedge said 2013 and my piece was com

Throwback Thursday Tutorial: Temperature Quilt

Image
Hello!  Happy Thursday!  One of my most popular posts is my temperature quilt finish , but I've never been thrilled about the photos I took of it.  I was headed out to photograph another quilt and decided to bring the temperature quilt along and try again. Much better! When I decided to make this quilt, I spent a lot of time researching what other people did, then combined all my favorite bits.  Each block is a 3" (finished) square in a square block.  The inside is a print representing the high temperature and the outside is a solid representing the low temperature.  The prints are a combination of blenders and novelty prints to commemorate special days.  Both follow the same temperature chart for determining which color to use.  If we were traveling, my print represents where we were that day (see the tiny crabs for our trip to Boston?), but the color always refers to the temperature at home.  The difference between our highest and lowest tem
