Project Quilting 17.3: Year of the Horse

This week's Project Quilting challenge took me on a journey to choose my project.  I went from horse to carousel to amusement parks to my Fair Day pattern.  Then, I took a trip to my local quilt store to find some horse fabric to meet the challenge in two ways, and ended up falling in love with a black and white seahorse print.  Thus, the Seahorse Fair Day quilt was born!

Fair Day is a four-color quilt pattern I wrote three years ago and it was fun to revisit again for this challenge.  I couldn't find a fourth color I liked until it was time to piece the back, then I discovered the perfect complimentary fabric in my stash - oops!

As you can see from this picture, I should have bought another 12 inches of the seahorse fabric.  You also may think that the two fabrics are slightly mismatched.  But, if you zoom in you can see that the seahorses are not actually black and white, some of them are a very light blue.  The blues of the seahorses and the stashed fabric match perfectly!

I quilted the quilt myself using large loops (like a seahorse tail!) in white thread, then used a black-on-black print from my stash for the binding.  I gravitate towards dark bindings on my quilt, so when I see a black print that I like, I buy some for future use.

I cheated on my Space Parade blocks and made one Farm Fresh block as a leader and ender block this week.  The bottom middle Space Parade block might look familiar - it's the cat fabric from the Project Quilting 17.2 challenge.  I realized I assembled it the wrong order so I had to take it apart and put it together again.

To close, I'll share this outtake photo of my original photoshoot idea.  I thought the Seahorse park toy would be a fun prop for my photo, but the wind had other ideas!

I'm linking up my successful finish with the Project Quilting linky party.  If you love the Fair Day quilt and want to buy your own copy, the coupon code CUDDLE is active until 2/14/26 and will give you an additional 15% off the sale price.  Thanks for stopping by!
