Baby Windsuit (Make the Quilt Your Own!)
Today I am sharing the third Windsuit sample that I made: my fun 1980s print Baby Windsuit quilt!
Even as I was making the solids mini quilt and the dyed denim throw-sized quilt, I knew that I wanted to make a version that included the leftover houndstooth fabric from the back of my second Cobblestone quilt. From there, I was off to the races trying to piece together a baby-sized quilt top from my stash. I easily matched the houndstooth with a fun purple Giucy Giuce print (now out of stock) that had a motif that was always just a little bit too large to use as a fussy cut.
I ended up chopping the edges off of each piece just a little bit and loved the overall effect. A little more digging in my stash, and I found the perfect fabric to be my pop of yellow with its matching accent colors. But when I went to make the half-square triangle blocks and the striped blocks I realized I had an issue - do you see it?
Too much blue and teal! No matter how I laid my blocks out, two of the blues were always touching! This is absolutely fine in some quilt pattern layouts, but for this one, it made secondary patterns that I wasn't a fan of. So I started twisting and rotating my blocks until I came up with a layout that resulted in none of the blues touching each other (luckily I realized my problem before I started sewing the half-square triangle blocks together so I didn't have to pick out any seams).
I solved my problem by rotating the striped blocks (#2) 90 degrees counter clockwise and flipping the half-square triangles (#4) so the diagonal ran in the opposite direction. Then I just set all my blocks in this new direction to create a fun new layout that is unique to me with none of the blues touching each other! The only thing to remember when doing this is that you may need to change your pressing direction on some of the blocks so that everything nests when you are doing your final assembly. But the final product is definitely worth the extra effort!
Baby Windsuit is finished the same way as the throw-size Windsuit: vertical lines in the ditch and one set of diagonal lines following the direction of the half-square triangle blocks. The back is a bold purple and black flannel and the binding is the same black print used in the quilt top.
