Zephyr Quilt-Along: Schedule and GIVEAWAY!
I announced the Zephyr Quilt-Along last month, and today I'm here to give some more details about the timeline for it. If your New Year's Resolution is to clear out your stash, this is the perfect quilt for you! Zephyr was designed to use up large pieces of fabric so it clears out big hunks of fabric quickly. The blocks in the rainbow version above use almost a full fat quarter and the blocks in the smaller quilt use almost a full fat eighth. All those pieces that you've cut into a little bit here or there will work perfectly for this quilt pattern. And the half blocks on the side use even less so smaller scraps can be used up as well!
Let's jump right in to the dates, and then I'll give you some information about the pattern:
February 13th: Pre-QAL blog post about alternate layouts
February 20th: Kick-Off post with layout thoughts
February 27th: Cut Background Fabric
March 6th & 13th: Sew Full Scrap Sets
March 20th: Finish Full Scrap Sets
March 27th & April 3rd: Sew Half and Quarter Scrap Sets
April 10th: Sew Rails Into Pairs
April 17th: Complete Top
April 28th: Finish Parade!
You'll note that the schedule only includes background fabric cutting - because this is a scrappy quilt I prefer to cut my feature fabrics as I go along. This lets me adjust the balance and incorporate fabric I forgot I had when I started. If you prefer to pre-cut all your fabric, that's the week to do it! The number of scrap sets you sew each week will vary depending on which layout you chose for your quilt.
Here are the fabric requirements for the Zephyr pattern:
The Zephyr pattern includes instructions for five different sizes, but on February 13th I'll be showing off my Christmas Zephyr quilt, which is a twin-size Zephyr made with 12" rails. I'll have a tutorial for scaling the pattern however you want, whether it's using 8" rails in the queen-size quilt or making a quilt that ends up being a completely different size from the ones in the chart. Zephyr is beginner-friendly; each block is made up of two rails that are pieced traditionally then combined to form the pinwheel shapes you see in the finished quilt. No sashing or on-point piecing required!
Don't have scraps? You can also use a fat quarter bundle to make your quilt! The pattern also includes a coloring sheet so you can lay out your design before you begin sewing and guidelines for making sure directional prints all go in the same direction.
Prizes: In the spirit of the scrappy quilt-along, all the prizes for this quilt-along will be scrappy! Each weekly winner will have their choice of two scrappy prize packs from my stash. There is also a giveaway on my Instagram page to win a copy of Zephyr (enter by January 23rd)!
Pattern version: If you have version 1.0 of the pattern, please contact me to get version 1.1!
